This is a reprint. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.

The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.

The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).

Reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.

EDITORIAL

This Newsletter completes our first year in building a common communications device where each HALES family member can submit their ideas, questions and articles for distribution to the other family members. During the last year we have accumulated a vast amount of genealogical materials together to use as input data for our HALES book. We have stimulated a great deal of interest and support, have begun to work together in the research of the HALES family name. I feel pleased with our accomplishments thus far.

As our second year begins let us all resolve to live up to the HALES family motto "United Force is Stronger," and make Volume 2 of our Newsletter better and bigger than Volume 1 has been.

Remember that it is a Newsletter and that it depends for its news on "YOU". Send me your items of news so that they can be shared by all.

Have you written your life story yet? If you don't do it how will it get done?

During this year resolve to write down the highlights of your life and send a copy to me so I can include it in our HALES book. Lets make it easier for our grandchildren to know us by leaving them an accurate first-hand report.

Have you sent me a copy of your family sheet yet? Our HALES book is growing rapidly, is your family in it? Resolve this year to take an active part in our organization and support it. Begin by completing the family sheet at the end of this Newsletter and send it to me if you have not already done so.

Be proud of your HALES heritage. Our ancestors have made positive contributions to this world we live in. Now all we have to do is to collect all the information we can, write a book about our family and our ancestors, so that we can let our posterity and everyone else know about the HALES family.

NEWS AND VIEWS

This section of our HALES Newsletter contains the "happenings" that I am made aware of between issues. Send me your announcements of area reunions, marriages, births, deaths, or other news of interest, and they will be included in the newsletter to all the Haleses. Contributions of articles for the newsletter are requested.

Received in the mail a large amount of genealogical history from Donald M. Hales Hermosa Beach, California. Donald has traced several branches of his family back to the early 1700s – one line back to 1299. He is a Junior in High School and is 16 years old. His Hales ancestry is from William Hales of Essex, England, born about 1783, married. Harriet Stubbons, their son Arthur S. Hales, born 21 Jan 1839 at Hemsted, England, died 3 July 1920 at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Congratulations to Staff Sergeant Grant M. Hales, Jr., the son of Eva S. Hales of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, who has been named Strategic Air Command (SAC) Historian of the Year for 1970. Sergeant Hales was selected from among 60 historians throughout the command. In the final judging he represented the Second Air Force and competed against three others who were named Best Historians in their Numbered Air Forces. The award is based on the quality of the history prepared, its usefulness, and on any suggestions for improvements within the historical program. The 25 year old first term airman has been the wing historian at Sawyer for three years.

Congratulations to Debra Raylene Hales, daughter of Melvin Ray and Barbara. Hales, on her marriage in West Covina, California on February 13, 1971 to Mr. Terrance Herzog. Please send me your address when you have one.

I have received a map from Bishop Robert Hales of Orem, Utah showing a large number of Parishes which were searched in 1963 in Kent, County, England. This map has been forwarded to our English Genealogist who is systematically researching all Parishes in Kent, County, England. He has acknowledged to me that his map has been updated to reflect these Parishes so that we may avoid duplication of efforts. So far over a third of the county has been researched.

Following the search of the Parish Registers he will begin a systematic search for HALES wills.

Our Society is still growing. In order for me to keep up with just the detail, I am spending 35 hours per month on it. Thank you for all the help and support you are giving me. In order to make our News and Views section a little better, however, I would like to ask each one of you to look over the vital statistics sections of your local newspaper for any information that you see concerning a Hales. I do not have access to all the newspapers I would like to have so I am asking for your support.

Please mail me any information that you see – don't wait for someone else to do it – they may be waiting for you and in the confusion it gets missed. I depend on you. I think of our Hales family motto, "Vis Unita Fortior (United Force is Stronger)." This unity will make our project meaningful.

The mail to England is now back in operation. I have received some more extracts within the last few days from our English Genealogist which will be published later in another newsletter. Most of the extracts that are contained in this issue were either researched by me or were donated through the mail from some of our members.

Sadie Hales Johnson writes, "I was Surprised and pleased that you printed my article which was published in the Carpinteria Herald in October of 1960 in your Newsletter of July 1970 ... There are one or two small inaccuracies in it, which I should correct for anyone seriously interested ..."

HISTORICAL SKETCHES – H. B. A. Hales

H. B. A. Hales (Hugh Byron Americus Hales) resides in Umatilla County, Oregon, five miles from Centerville and eight from Weston. His parents, Hugh and Elizabeth Matthews Hales, were born in Virginia about 1800 and moved from there to Gallia County, Ohio, and then to Henry County, Iowa. They reared a family of four sons and four daughters, the fourth son being the subject of this sketch.

H. B. A. Hales was born in Henry County, Iowa on April 30, 1842. He lived in the home farm and attended the public schools fitting himself for college.

The Rebellion broke out before he entered upon a collegiate career, and he enlisted on the fifth of October, 1861, in Co. K., 4th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. He served as a sergeant four years and was in twenty-two engagements, having two horses shot under him, but escaping without a wound himself.

He was mustered out at Atlanta and returned to Iowa, where he engaged in farming until 1875.

Hales then emigrated to this coast and located the land he now farms in Umatilla County, Oregon. He now owns 1,000 acres of that splendid land along the base of the Blue Mountains, and has the entire tract under cultivation.

In 1881 he raised over 12,000 bushels of wheat, besides oats and barley. (A view of this place can be found among the illustrations of the book Historical Sketches of Walla Walla, Whitman, Columbia and Garfield Counties, Washington Territory, by Frank T. Gilbert, Portland, Oregon, 1882).

He uses two headers, a thresher, and two six-horse gang plows, summer fallowing half of his land each year.

On the sixth of November in 1880 Mr. Hales married Miss Laura V. Rigby, of Goldendale, Washington Territory, daughter of Reverend G. W. Rigby of the M. E. Church, who came to the Washington Territory from Logan County, Iowa. She is the oldest of a family of two boys and two girls.

Mr. Hales has been a member of the M. E. Church since twelve years of age. He is a republican in politics and cast his first vote for Lincoln in 1864.

THE HALES FAMILY OF COVENTRY, WARWICK, ENGLAND

John Hales, often called 'club-foot' Hales because he was lamed by an accident in youth, was a younger son of Thomas Hales of Hales Place in Halden, Kent, England. He was not educated at any university, but contrived to teach himself Latin, Greek, French, and German. About 1543 he published Highway to Nobility, and translated Plutarch's Precepts for the Preservation of Health. John Hales accumulated a great estate in monastery and chantry lands and was the founder of the first free school by converting St. John’s Hospital in Coventry into one. He was a member of parliament for Preston, Lancashire, and made an effort to assist the poor by introducing three bills in the parliament of 1548. They were all rejected. On Somerset's fall Hales fled from England, and in 1552 was at Strasburg, Germany. On the accession of Mary his property was confiscated, and he retired to Frankfort, Germany. With his brother Christopher, he was prominently engaged in the religious contentions among the English exiles in that city. He died on December 28, 1571, and was buried in the church of St. Peter-le-Poer in London. His estates, with his principal house in Coventry called Hales Place, otherwise the White Fryers, passed to John, son of h1s brother Christopher.

This John Hales built a mansion at Keresley, near Coventry, where he resided. In 1586, he married Frideswede, daughter of William Faunt, Esq., of Foston, in Leicestershire, and the widow of Robert Cotton, Esq. She died and was buried in a vault on the north side of St. Michael' s church, Coventry, where a monument still remains to her memory. About 1600, he married a second wife, Avis; who in 1634 was living at the Whitefriars, a widow. It appears he died in 1609. He had four children: John, Mary, Jane, and Bethany.

John Hales succeeded his father in 1609. In 1613, he married Dorothy Croker, daughter of John Croker, Esq. of Battyford, Gloucestershire. On her decease, in 1623, he married Christian, daughter of John Fulwood, Esq., of Ford-hall, in Wotton-Wawen, Warwick. (This generation is omitted in the Baronetages).

Christopher Hales, his son, in 1645, married Jane Purefoy, daughter of George Purefoy, Esq. of Wadley, Berkshire. It is probable that Christopher Hales died in 1658, leaving John his son and heir.

John Hales succeeded his father, and by an inventory taken by his mother Jane, in 1658, the annual value of his property in and near Coventry was £148. 4s. He was created a Baronet on August 28, 1660 by Charles II, when the fees paid were £113. 0s. 6d. In 1668 he married Ann Johnson, daughter of Alderman Johnson, of London. He died in 1677. Ann, his widow, was living in 1684, but died before 1713. They had five children, Christopher, Edward, Robert, George, and Ann.

Sir Christopher Hales, the second Baronet, represented Coventry in Parliament in the years 1696, 1698, 1701,1702, 1710, and 1713. He died unmarried January 19, 1717, and was succeeded by his brother, Sir Edward Hales.

Sir Edward Hales, who disposed the whole of the property at Coventry to pay his brother Christopher's debts, afterwards resided at Lincoln, where he died September 7, 1720.
