This is a reprint. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.

The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.

The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).

Reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.

EDITORIAL

This issue begins volume 2 of our HALES family Newsletter. With your help we can make it an even bigger success than volume 1 has been. Please remember that this is an

active family organization.

Many things are happening at the same time: Our Hales Book is building rapidly; Our researcher in England has been asked to increase the time each month that he will be working for us; and we will be holding family reunions this year at four locations across the country.

Please remember to fill out your family

sheet and mail it to me for our book. Also, this is the year to write a short story about you and your family for our book. (Include in this short history the information about your ancestors: parents, grandparents, or as much as you can remember).

Please be one of the people that do things – if you don't send the information to me it probably won’t get done and get into our Hales book. Lets leave a first hand story about us for our posterity.

The HALES Newsletter this year will be published on a quarterly basis. This is done for several reasons – increases in postal rates and materials have affected us somewhat and in order to keep the cost of the Newsletter at the same price an adjustment is necessary. The Researchers fees have also been increased slightly. The same quantity of information can be mailed out quarterly as before at a savings of nearly $100.00 per year. Please let me know your feelings about this adjustment.

For those of you that have not already done so, your yearly dues to assist our Society

in this project is now due. The amount requested is minimal and helps this effort

greatly.

Orders are now being accepted for an 8" by 10" color rendition of our Hales family

coat-of-arms. The process used for this reproduction is by offset press. The reproduction is an enlarged reproduction in color of the arms on the cover of this newsletter.

While coat-of-arms cannot be legally displayed except by the owner in many European countries, in America we feel it honors our family name. We display it to honor our ancestors.

The rendition may be displayed in an 8" by 10" picture frame larger. The cost of this rendition is $2. postpaid.

NEWS AND VIEWS

This section of our HALES Newsletter contains the "happenings" that I am made aware of "between issues. Send me. your announcements of area reunions, marriages, births, deaths, or other news of interest, and they will be included in the Newsletter to all the Haleses. Contributions of articles for the Newsletter are requested.

For the first time in the history of the American Badminton Association, a husband and wife have respectively won the United States men’s singles and ladies singles badminton championships at Las Vegas. The titles were won by Dr. R. Stanton and Mrs. Diane Hales, both members of the Pasadena Badminton Club. Stanton had an easy time winning his second successive U.S. National singles title, defeating Charles Coakley of Costa Mesa, California 15-6, 15-6. Diane, on the other hand, won a "cliff hanger" from Pam Stockton of Flint, Michigan to gain her first national title, 11-4, 5-11, 12-11. Earlier the California State titles had been won by the pair as Stanton dropped Chris Kinard 15-11, 17-15 in the semifinals and then came back to down Mike Walker 15-4, 15-10 while Diane returned from a slow start to rip Judi Kelly 4-11, 11-4, 11-7 in the semis and then copped an 11-3, 11-4 victory over Diana Mies to win the women’s singles. Dr. Hales teaches mathematics at Pomona College in Claremont, California and is the son of Mr. And Mrs. Raleigh S. Hales, 1106 Arden Road, Pasadena, California. Stanton and Diane Hales have one daughter who is two years old – Karen.

Jennifer Marie Hales arrived on April 5, 1971 the new daughter of Melvin and Janeen Davis Hales of PO Box 2142, Bakersfield, California 93303. Jennifer has one "big" sister Susan Elizabeth Hales. Janeen says that Jennifer sleeps all night and most of the day and is a real good baby. Congratulations Melvin and Janeen on your new arrival.

How easy it is to lose track of your relatives – especially if they are a little further removed than on a first cousin basis. One was to renew acquaintances is to attend family reunions. Another was is to fill in family trees and then meet people you identify as branches of your family – either by mail or in person. Our Hales book continues to grow and several of the branches have been identified. Two of these branches are illustrated in this newsletter. Which branch of the Hales family do you descend from?

  1. Stephen and Mary Ann Hales. They arrived in Canada in 1832.
  2. Dr. Garland and Susan Cole Hales. They lived at New Sore, Prince Edward County, Virginia in the early 1800s.
  3. Hugh and Mary Hales. Hugh was born about 1740 and his posterity lived in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
  4. Edward J. and Sally Hana Hales. They have been located in central-eastern North Carolina about 1790.
  5. Hugh Barlow and Olive Almyra Wadleigh Hales. Hugh was born in England January 17, 1823 and emigrated to Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.
  6. Robert and Elizabeth Taylor Hales. Robert was born in England and had grandchildren born about 1860 in Waupaca, Wisconsin area.
  7. Henry and Susannah Oldfield Hales. They married about 1780 in England. His grandson Frederick William and Margaret Jenkins Hales settled at Prince Edward Island and their posterity settled in Minnesota, Montana, and Oregon.
  8. Luke J. and Catherine Sewell Hales. Of Pickens County, North Carolina in the 1790s, this family shows trails through Tennessee to Texas.
  9. Thomas Martin and Frances E. Hales. Their family and posterity are located in Georgia about 1828.
  10. John and Sarah Playford Hales. Married in 1839 and have posterity in Canada – including Alfred Hales, Member of Parliament in Ottawa.
  11. Arthur S. and Betsy Ann Coppleston Hales. Arthur was born in Hemsted, Essex, England on January 21, 1838 and died in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He has posterity in Massachusetts and California.

These families can be found in our Hales Manuscript.

CONTRIBUTIONS

One advantage of having a central location for sending information concerning the Hales family is that a more complete record can be compiled from the bits of data sent from many places – an example of this follows.

The following information was received from Sadie Hales Johnson.

I found this Hales family information when I visited the New York Historical Society when I visited there a few years ago:

From:

  1. Early Records of Simpson Families, by Helen A. Simpson, published 1927-1929, pages 316-317.
  2. From History of the Upper Ohio Valley, Upton, Taylor, Brand, and Fuller, Madison, Wisconsin, 1890.

From Simpson History:

Hugh Hales of Jefferson County, Ohio, whose will is dated October 10, 1812, and attested April 7, 1817, is quite likely the father of John, but as he wills all to his wife, Jemima, during the time she is a widow, and afterwards is to be equally divided between my heirs, there is no record of his children's names. A witness is David Sloane, probably the same as D. Sloane for John’s will, who did not appear when will is attested and whose own will reads, "Done in Knoxville 18 August 1850."

(Note: The above relationship of Hugh to John is a supposition. The information received from another source links Hugh to John as brothers).

John Hales of Jefferson County, Ohio, made his will on file at Steuvenville, April 29th, 1839, two years after the death of his wife, Jane (1857-1837) and six years after the death of his son, Hugh, husband of Jane Simpson.

His bequests are:

To my granddaughter, Jane Swinehart.

To my grandson, John Milligan.

To my granddaughter, Polly Jackman Adams.

To my granddaughter, Betsy Mansfield Thomas.

To my son, William Hales.

To the heirs of my son, John Hales, deceased.

To the heirs of my son, Hugh Hales, deceased (who married Jane Simpson)

To my son, Andrew Hales.

To my son, Robert Hales.

To my son, Moses Hales.

To my granddaughter, Martha Maxwell, to wit, daughter of my granddaughter, Jane Swinehart.

Executors: my son, William Hales of Pennsylvania and Thomas Mansfield, my son-in-law.

Witnesses: James Alexander, D. Sloane, John Martin.

From History of Upper Ohio Valley:

Andrew Hales, Sr., born in Pennsylvania, came to Ohio in a very early day and settled near Richmond, Jefferson County, died about 1866. His son, Andrew. Jr., born near Richmond, spent early manhood teaching common branches and music. He married, 1851, Nancy Hout, daughter of Peter, early resident of this county. In 1852 he accompanied some neighbors to California, where he died same year. Their son, George A. Hales, born May, 1852, was educated at Richmond College, entered lumber business, became successful and prosperous at Toronto near Steubenville, married 1878, Alice Fleming, three daughters.

Elisha Hales of Salem Township, Jefferson County, in will dated June 21, 1841, attested September 27, 1841, wills his farm on which he lives to his nephew, Thomas Metcalf, and the remainder of his property to be divided "amongst my brothers and sisters." His brothers may include John above, and they will all be sons of Hugh.

Witness: Adam Stewart, who also is witness of John Simpson's Will.

Mary Hales is certainly his sister, for she wills to her nephew Thomas Metcalf; also to her sisters Sarah Maitland and Henrietta Spencer. Dated March 15, 1862, attested 1865.

The son, Andrew Hales, mentioned in the will of John, is probably the Andrew married to Hannah, whose daughter "Hannah Rebecca", died 1810 aged five years and is buried near John and Jane Hales in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.

The family of this Andrew Hales, who was father-in-law of Nancy Hout, as named in his will, 1866, on file at Steubenville; to wife, Mary, real estate in Richmond; eldest son, James; 2nd son, John; 3rd son, William; 4th son, Andrew; daughter, Mary Taylor; daughter, Isabelle Hales; daughter, Elizabeth Wilson; son, Thomas C.; son Samuel B.; Son, Alexander Lewis; daughter, Margaret Jane.

Hugh Hales married Jane Simpson 1813 (he was born September 10, 1791, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, which later became part of Beaver County, Pennsylvania), he died April 14, 1833, in Richland County, Ohio. He came with his parents, John Hales and Jane, to Ohio at the age of eight or ten. In the Mount Tabor Cemetery, in the far corner to the left from the Simpson lot, are two fine brown tombstones similar to those of our ancestors, which mark the graves of Hugh Hales' parents and other relatives. The first "In Memory of Jane, consort of John Hales, who departed this life June 11, 1837, 80 years of age." Next it is a stone in memory of John Hales, the dates of which unfortunately I did not copy, but I find his will at Steubenville was made April 29, 1839, two years after the death of his wife, and six years after the death of his son, Hugh. Beyond is a tablet in memory of Hannah Rebecca, daughter of Andrew and Hannah Hales, died 1810, aged five years.

There is also a monument to Hales in United Presbyterian Cemetery at Richmond, of which records I took no copy. As it is next to the Hout monument, it is probably of our kin.

Obituary from "The Richland County Shield and Banner," published Mansfield, Ohio: Died at her residence in Mifflin Township, October 13, 1881, Mrs. Jane Simpson Hales, aged 88, born Washington County, Pennsylvania, moved to Jefferson County, Ohio, 1795, was there married 1813 to Hugh Hales, now deceased, then to Richland County, September, 1815, settled on farm – 66 years there.

Her husband, Hugh Hales, came to Richland in spring 1815, cleared a patch planted it in potatoes and corn and prepared a 3-sided camp to live in – later erected log cabin with punchion flooring, later brick house – for eleven years. Member Presbyterian Church 57 years. Devout.

That completes most of the information that I received from the two sources indicated. It is interesting to note that Query #4. requesting information on this branch of the HALES family came from yet another source. It would appear that there are many members of this branch of the family from coast to coast. What can you contribute that will help make our records of this branch more complete? If you have any information about any branch of the HALES family please send me a copy of it so that I can combine it together with the other information I have to make our HALES book more complete. Thank you for your contributions of information and your support.
