Hales Corners Wisconsin
Do you live in a place that bears the name "HALES" such as Hales Corners, Wisconsin? If you do, do you know how the place got its name? If you know of such a place and know how it got its name I would appreciate hearing from you with the information about it.
Hales in Gloucestershire inquiry
Does anyone have any information about the town or village in Gloucestershire, England called HALES? This town is mentioned as the birthplace of Alexander of Hales ca 1245. Thomas Hales ca 1250 poet and religious writer presumably was a native of Hales also, and Thomas Hales ca 1740, French dramatist, belonged to a good English family which was settled, according to Grimm, who knew him well, in Gloucestershire. If you have any information on this place please send me a copy of what you have.
The problem being researched in publishing these old English wills is of finding the ancestry of our American HALES families. One of the immediate problems researched is attempting to find the parentage of John Hales of Boxley, Kent, England who married Mary Foster. There does not appear to be any HALES entries in the Boxley Parish Registers for this family prior to 1725 and yet reference is made to a Hales name in the Marriage Register of Loose, Kent, England as follows : Marriage 5 Jun 1679, Samuel Haile of Boxley and Ann Lane of Loose. This and other inconsistencies has led me to ask our researcher, Mr .Raymond E. Stokes of Cobham, Kent, England, to look more closely at the Boxley area. He has sent me many wills recently which included the ones that follow.

James Howard Hales
James Howard Hales, 43, a prominent sculptor in this country and abroad, and the son of Mrs. Edith K. Hales of Santa Barbara, died Dec. 9 in an Everett, Washington hospital.
He had lived in Everett for the last 12 years where he was an active member of the Northwest Institute of Sculpture and past president of the Creative Arts Assn. of Everett.
A bronze work by Mr. Hales was presented in Osaka, Japan, for the World's Fair there and also at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962. He also designed the war memorial for the Snohomish County Courthouse in Washington.
Surviving besides his mother, Mrs. Hales, are two sons, James and Peter, both of Sonoma.
Following services Dec. 14 in Everett the remains were cremated and placed at sea off the coast of Westport, Wash.
The following is a brief sketch presented at his funeral services:
"James Howard Hales expressed one of God's greatest gifts – that of creativity. From his earliest childish modeling with soap, pipe cleaners and clay, to the later expression of his art as a nationally known metal sculptor, he expressed this creativity.
James was born in Chicago, Illinois, March 10, 1929 the, son of James Howard and Edith K. Hales of Park Falls, Wisconsin, and grandson of Bertram Hales of Oak Park, Illinois. After high school at New Trier County School in Winnetka, Illinois, and Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, he attended the Chicago Art Institute. Then he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Arts, and his Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado.
He served two years in active duty with the Army and six years in the reserve.
As president of the Northwestern Institute of Sculpture he was instrumental in creating the Garden of Sculpture for the First National Bank Exhibit at the Seattle World's Fair, and was fortunate in winning their award. (This piece was latex: discovered by a friend in an U.S. State Department magazine in Russia showing outstanding artists of our country). Another piece, the Wizard, went to the last Japanese World's Fair at Osaka.
James had many one-man shows in both galleries and museums. He was proud to have won the State of Washington's Governor's Invitational Award with a bronze piece titled "Crucifix 1965." This bronze was one of a group sent on an official tour of Japan. Also his sculptures are in important collections and museums throughout the United States and Canada.
Another highlight of his career is the Snohomish County Courthouse War Memorial. The great arches soaring skyward to the top of the Courthouse building again show the strong creative feeling he had for that which is vital and moving. The figures of the two soldiers are not militant but depicted tired and dependent men, and show great tenderness and compassion. His work expressed his interest in humanity and its ideas rather than a handsome visual image.
All of his work is noted for a sense of dynamic movement. To quote a newspaper critic: "The mystery of James Hales is the more familiar mystery of life itself. The movement, the breath, the vital muscle-rhythm and blood-rhythm of creatures vary much alive."

If each person receiving the Newlsletter would just send the minimum amount requested for "Active Membership" in our Family Society (just $2.00) we would have more than ample monies to run and even improve our Society. I would like to increase our expendatures for research in England and also Hire a Researcher for us on the east coast (the Carolina's, Virginia, etc.) so that we can make faster progress on our ancestry search. Please give me your support and join our Family Organization by sending me at least the minimum ($2.00) so that we can accomplish this goal. Many thanks to those that have already helped during the past two years in making this effort possible.
