The Hales Newsletter contains current events, historical sketches and genealogical information pertaining to the Hales family. It is published by Kenneth Glyn Hales, secretary of The Hales Genealogical Society from 1970 through 1981 and The Hales Family History Society since 1995.

This is the on-line version. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.

The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.

The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).

If you would like a printed version, reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.

Editorial

This issue of the Hales Newsletter completes the third year of our existence as a Family Organization. Acting under the premise that family records do little good if they are kept hidden – usually dying with the one keeping them – through the newsletter we have published a great amount of information. The Savior stated, "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house." (St. Matthew 5:15) This has been the basic precept of this society, that of making our records visible to all. We have a record to be proud of.

In order to make sure that we have ample funds to continue the important phases of our society, such as research in England where our dollar does not go as far as it used to, I have reduced the cost of the newsletter by dropping from the mailing list those who have not responded in any way to it. There is no way of knowing how much value they place on it and the money could be better spent by sending it to our researcher.

My first three volumes have been put into a set of plastic covers. Each newsletter has been punched, re-stapled back together, and put into the plastic covers. This summer I plan to so arrange the issues sent to the Genealogical Society in the same manner. Sam Hales of Shawnee Mission, Kansas wrote that he has had his bound and they look quite nice. This is an idea you might like to do.

Things are still a little hectic here following our move to Walnut Creek, but I have our records in order and am able to continue in an organized fashion from this point. I will be adding a 13 by 15 foot room to the back of this house to contain our records, a darkroom capability for pictures, and my printing equipment. When this is done – which should happen by June – everything should progress better.

Year four is beginning for our newsletter. I welcome your contributions of information and funds. Lets make this year even bigger and better in the way of progress than the last three. Thank you for all of the support you have given me in the past.

NEWS AND VIEWS

This section of our Hales Newsletter contains the "happenings" that I am made aware of between issues. One of the many advantages of a Society such as this is that information can be published for all the Hales family to see. Remember just one address, send your announcements of area reunions, marriages, births, deaths, etc., and they will be included in the news1etter to all the Hales’es. Contributions of artic1es for the newsletter are welcomed. Dig through your records and send me anything of value about your branch of the fami1y. What you have might be the bit of information another member of the family is 1ooking for. I will edit what I receive and add it to our growing fi1e of information.

We are finally located in our new home in Walnut Creek, California. I have most: of our files where I can locate them so once again I will be able to answer your letters expediently. Thank you for your patience while things were disorganized. Once again, our new address for all correspondence is: 1951 Chateau Court, Walnut Creek, California 94598.

ROBIN LOUISE ROBISON HALES Honored. Robin Hales was selected as Idaho’s Outstanding Young Woman of the Year for 1972. Her qualifications for the title include numerous civic and church activities.

Her civic activities include organizing and working with a community theater group, hospital volunteer work and several national health-related charities.

Mrs. Hales has served in the Relief Society, Primary and YWMIA. Currently she is the Sunday School chorister in the Nampa 7th Ward, Nampa Stake.

She is married to H. Leon Hales. They have three children and belong to the church foster parents program.

DR. R. STANTON HALES, JR. Elected. Dr. Raleigh Stanton Hales, Jr., has been elected to the board of trustees of the Polytechnic School of Pasadena. A graduate of Poly, he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard. He is now an assistant Professor of Mathematics at Pomona. Dr. Hales is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh Stanton Hales of Pasadena and lives with his wife, Diane, at 1421 Niagara Avenue, Claremont, California.

ALFRED WASHINGTON HALES Awarded Prize. Alfred Washington Hales recently received a share of the George Pólya Prize in Applied Mathematics at an awards ceremony held in Austin, Texas in October 1972. He shared the honor with Prof. R. I. Jewett (Western Washington State College) for their paper, "Regularity and Positional Games." The Pólya prize is awarded for a notable application of combinatorial theory made within the previous five or ten years. Prof. Hales (Department of Mathematics, UCLA) is the son of Raleigh Stanton Hales of Pasadena, and the brother of Dr. R. Stanton Hales, Jr.

Old West Magazine article – George Hales. In the Summer 1972 edition of Old West magazine, published by Western Publications, Inc., PO Box 3338, 1012 Edgecliff Terrace, Austin, Texas 70764, there is an article entitled "The Agony of a Mormon Polygamist." The article is centered around the life of Thomas Schofield and tells of his association in Beaver, Utah with George Hales. The article is quite lengthy or I would reproduce it for you here. It is well researched and written and describes hiding out in the mountains using Butch Cassidy’s hideouts to evade the problems caused by the Edmunds-Tucker Act passed in 1382 by Congress to crush the Mormon "movement." The George Hales spoken of was one of the sons of Stephen and Mary Ann Hales Hales who emigrated to Canada in 1832 from Rainham, Kent. England. His history-has been printed already in an earlier newsletter. You can purchase a copy of this magazine by writing to the publisher. The cost is 50 cents plus postage and it is well worth the price.

Questionnaire response. I was quite pleased with the response to the address questionnaire sent with the last newsletter. I received back a total of 141 of the questionnaires for a 14.2% response. I feel that some of them probably got lost in the mail with our move to Walnut Creek, California from Bakersfield so it appears that there is interest in our society. For those who did not answer and those who have not responded in any way during the last three years of our existence, I regret that this issue of the Newsletter will not reach them. They will instead receive a letter explaining that due to their apparent lack of concern or support they have been dropped from the mailing list. This letter to them will also contain a "last chance" form for them to have their family included in our Hales book. I feel that the cost of sending the newsletter could be put to better use than to send it to those that have not interest.

Robert Lionel Hales – Scientific papers. At last count I note that Robert Lionel Hales has published 17 scientific papers in the field of Electron Microscope and Virology. Listed in American Men of Science Eleventh Edition, The Physical and Biological Sciences, Supplement 5, Robert is the son of Jonathan and Mattie Sue Williams Hales. Born December 26, 1924 at Drumwright, Oklahoma he married Marjorie Ann Vikan at Bartlesville. They have two daughters, Betsy Marie and Barbara Sue. Congratulations for your scientific accomplishments from all of the Hales clan. The Robert L. Hales family make their home at 1119 Green Valley, Houston, Texas 77055.

Watch Repair Slips. An interesting letter from Leonard Leslie Hales of 689 Hazel St., Hope, BC Canada, tells of a verge movement watch – in excellent running condition – passed down from father to son in his branch of the Hales family. He estimates its origin between 1760-1775. Cradled in the back of its case were some old repair slips which read as follows:

1. Vogt. Watch and Clock Maker

Thrapston

(On reverse side):-

10-1871 Mr. Hails

Catworth

2. J. R. Scrivener

Watch Maker, Tilbrook

Kimbolton

(On reverse side):- Mr. Hailes

Leighton, June 1878

3. C. A. Budds, Late Peacock.

Watch and Clock Maker

High St. Huntingdon

(On reverse side):-

Mr. Hales. Leighton. – I.M.T. – I/M.

The watch was made by Sam Peacock of Kimbolton. The number on the watch is 7877. Do the names or places on these slips ring a bell with anyone? These English towns might prove a connection in England for this branch of the family. If you know where they are, please let me know.

Edward Hales of Port Hope, Ontario. In a letter from Gerre Hales Shuttleworth of Walled Lake, Michigan, I note that she has on a very old and tattered piece of paper information that says her progenitor, Edward Hales of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, had a brother, William, a brickmaker who had a "brick yard" on the outskirts of Port Hope, Ontario. She states that this William was born in 1803, died on March 13, 1867, and is buried in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. The family sheet submitted to me by Carol Hales Allen of Yuma, Arizona says that her progenitor, William Hales, was born on February 24, 1803 in Staffordshire, England, and died on March 12, 1867. His children came from the Port Hope, Ontario, Canada area. The death dates are too close to be an accident. This would make the.Leek, Staffordshire, England Parish registers make sense. I feel that William Hales, mentioned above, was born February 24, 1803, baptised March 23, 1803, and was the son of John and Mary Hales of Leek, Staffordshire, England, and since Edward Hales names him on the above note as his brother, Edward's parents are also John and Mary Hales of Leek. This answers Query #2 in Vol. 1. No.1.

Edward E. Hales named Regent. Sam Hales of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, our retired UP International Correspondent who always seems to have his eyes peeled for Hales information has informed me that Governor Patrick J. Lucey of the state of Wisconsin has named Edward E. Hales to the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents – the first black man to sit on the board. Sam finished his letter with, "So! Sometime we must find out more about him." For my files, how many other people of the black race are receiving this Newsletter? If you are one of them, we would like to know more about you, who your parents are, and which one of our ancestors gave you your name.

WANTED – Mary Isabella Hales Horne information. Correspondence and records from descendents of Mary Isabella Hales Horne, daughter of Stephen and Mary Ann Hales Hales, who married Joseph Horne in Canada. If you have any information on this family, please communicate directly with Bonnie Ellis Pryor of 4235 S. 3200 West, Granger UT 84119.

Christopher Craig Hales marries Jill Wightman. Congratulations to Christopher Craig Hales upon his marriage July 29, 1972 to Jill Wightman. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray A. Hales. Jill is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max D. "Dutch" Wightman. A reception was held for the new Hales family at the Women's Cultural Center on Saturday, July 29, 1972. The Women's Cultural Center is located at 310 W. 500 North, Provo, Utah.

HALES REUNIONS. Tentative dates are set for reunions to be held this summer. More

details will be announced in the next newsletter as to time and place. Please reserve the dates mentioned below if you intend attending any of them.

Area to be held – Date to be held

Salt Lake City, Utah – July 14, 1973

San Francisco, California – July 28, 1973

Woodville, Texas – August 13, 1973

Los Angeles, California – August 25, 1973

Thanks to all of you who have made me aware of the above happenings. Please make sure that you send me anything you see that is of interest to our Hales family – do not make the assumption that someone else will send me a copy. A proverb states that if someone else is not doing it then it is your turn. No one else was sending out a Hales Newsletter so I felt it was my turn. Because of my limited sources, I need all the help I can get, and I thank you for it.

IN MEMORIAM

Harriet Hales Ellis. (Deseret News, June 11, 1910, page 3, column 5). At the home of her daughter in Woods Cross, Davis County, Utah, May 24, 1910, Mrs. Harriet Hales Ellis passed away after a long illness and of old age debilities.

She was born June 10, 1824 in Rainham, Kent, England, daughter of Stephen and Mary Ann Hales. Her father’s family emigrated to Canada in 1832 and settled in Toronto, Ontario. Here the family became identified with the Mormon Church in 1836. In the Spring of 1838 they started by team to join the Saints in Farr West, Missouri, arriving in the fall of the same year.

At Farr West they shared in the mobbing and persecutions that the saints endured at that time. It was here they first met the Prophet Joseph Smith who at that time was betrayed into the hands of the mob by Colonel George Hinkley, and who with other prisoners were sentenced to be shot without a hearing.

After the expulsion from Missouri with the Saints, they moved to Quincy, Illinois. There Harriet married John Ellis on October 31, 1839, then they moved to Nauvoo in 1842 where they lived until expelled by mobs.

In the spring of 1851 they started for Salt Lake City, arriving in September of the same year. Here she stayed with her sister, Mrs. Mary Isabella Hales Horne. Finally making her home in Bountiful where she has resided ever since.

Her husband preceded her to the other side 39 years ago. She is the mother of 12 children, 9 of whom survive. Also 101 grandchildren, 205 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great grandchildren. She was firm and steadfast member of the church, having been a Sunday School Teacher for 25 years and a Relief Society worker for many years. Her kindly ministrations to the sick, her sympathetic heart and loving spirit won the esteem of all who know her.

Corrections on obituary of Wilson and Annie Laurie Hales – April 10, 1972. Her name is Annie Laurie and not "Anne Lori." Catherine "Hensen" should be Hansen. Esther De Graff is misspelled "Easter." Mrs. LaVerne Coombs is in the Fiji Islands on an LDS mission and not in Illinois. Odetta H. Bramwell is misspelled "Bramwill." The above corrections to the newspaper clipping used for the source information was sent to me by Odetta H. Bramwell.

The above wills and administrations are from a total of 125 that I now have in my possession. To date 59 of the 125 have appeared in Hales Newsletters. Many of these old wills and administrations have to be translated from the original Latin, while the others, written in hard to read old English script, must be studied out. It is a long process and expensive as far as the Latin translations are concerned. An index and the rest of the wills will be published in the newsletter as time and funds permit.
