The Hales Newsletter contains current events, historical sketches and genealogical information pertaining to the Hales family. It is published by Kenneth Glyn Hales, secretary of The Hales Genealogical Society from 1970 through 1981 and The Hales Family History Society since 1995.

The Hales Family History Society

5990 North Calle Kino

Tucson, Arizona 85704-1704

This is the on-line version. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.

The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.

The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).

If you would like a printed version, reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.

EDITORIAL

This issue of our Hales Newsletter begins our fourth year. Starting with volume four, of which this is a part, the Hales Newsletter will be sent only to those who have become a member of our Hales Genealogical Society.

Last month the mailing list was reduced by editing out those who have never made a contribution. The reason this is being done is so that we might have more funds available to upport our research effort. In this way we will make more and faster progress and the newsletter should contain more items of research. Also, we will be asking for a minimum donation of $5.00 for the year for the same reasons as above. This only amounts to slightly over 41 cents each month which should not be a hardship for anyone, especially since we gain so much by pooling our funds.

The amount of information which is published in our newsletter could not be purchased by any one person for that small amount. Thanks to all of you who have helped in this project – this is your family organization – all that I do is perform the service for you of putting the newsletter together. You should feel proud of your accomplishment so far.

About your address label. This year your newsletter will have a new label. The label will be made on receipt of your contribution.

I will make enough labels at that time for your yearly newsletters. When I run out of labels made in this manner, your contribution will have elapsed. On the label will be some numbers and a month which will let you know when your subscription to the newsletter expires and will let me know where I can find your label if changes are necessary. A sample label is illustrated below:

74FEB0209

Kenneth G1yn Hales

1951 Chateau Court

Walnut Creek CA 94598

The "74FEB0209" means that the subscription runs out with the 1974 February issue of the newsletter – the other numbers are indexing numbers used to find your address on the mimeograph masters and are meaningless to you. The address labels are printed on 8 ½ by 11 inch perforated sheets with 3 columns of 11 labels. The indexing numbers are page number and label number (00 to 33) on the page. No notice for renewal will be sent so please monitor the date on your address label so that you will know about your status.

The large job of keeping addresses up to date for all of the Hales family has been reduced by limiting the number, but it also impacts publishing Hales Directories. Hence, the Hales Directory scheduled for November 1974 will be the last directory published by the Hales Genealogical Society. Please make sure that your entry is how you want it. The format will remain the same. If you have not as yet answered the address questionnaire sent to you in the November 1972 newsletter, please do so at your earliest opportunity.

REUNION TIMES AND PLACES

Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake City, Utah Hales family reunion will be held on July 14, 1973 between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Main Bowery by the lake at Liberty Park. Make this a must this year – mark it on your calendar. The children will have a good time at the park while we visit, share information, and renew acquaintances. Plan to bring a picnic lunch.

San Francisco, California. The San Francisco, California Hales family reunion will be held on July 28th 1973 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Roberts Recreational area of the Redwood Regional Park just east of Oakland in the Oakland hills. To get to Roberts Recreational Area take the Warren Freeway to Joaquin Miller Road. Take Joaquin Miller Road to Skyline Blvd. Take Skyline Blvd. north to Roberts Gate, the entrance to Roberts Recreatlona1 Area. Roberts Gate is approximately three fourths of a mile from Joaquin Miller Road on Skyline Blvd. Bring a picnic lunch. The facilities also has room for softball for the kids. In the event fire danger makes it so that we can not use the park on this day, the alternate location will be at Concord Community Park on Cowell Road in the city of Concord, California.

Woodville, Texas. Although I have not received a confirmation, The Texas Hales reunion by tradition is to be held on the second Sunday in August – August 13th 1973. The traditional place is the roadside park on Highway 287 about 6 miles north of Woodville, Texas. Prizes are given for the oldest, the youngest, and the one who came the farthest. Also the Hales pennant is awarded yearly to the Hales family that has the most members of their branch of the family in attendance. You may write Alice Hales of Route 3 Box 150, Livingston, Texas 77351 to confirm if this reunion will be held.

Los Angeles, California. The Los Angeles, California Hales fami1y reunion will be held on August 25th 1973 at Murdy Park in Huntington Beach, California. Murdy Park is located near the intersection of Warner and Golden West Streets in the northern section of Huntington Beach. The picnic area has been reserved from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. but we can use the park as long as the group desires. As in the past we will have games and races with awards for the youngsters attending the reunion. Pack up your lunch or visit the Colonel and meet all of us there.

Remember the date, remember the place –

Salt Lake City, Utah 14 July 1973

San Francisco, California 28 July 1973

Woodville, Texas 13 August 1973

Los Angeles, California 25 August 1973

We hope to see you at one of our reunions.

NEWS AND VIEWS

This section of our Hales Newsletter contains the "happenings" that I am made aware of between issues. Contributions of articles for this section are requested and welcomed. If you see an item of information concerning anyone named Hales, please send me a copy so that it can be included in our Newsletter.

I have a total of 80 copies of a 33 page booklet compiled by Albert and Alice Hales of Woodville, Texas in my possession. This booklet is the continuation of the descendants of Silas Hales, born ca 1753, which was published in Vol. 2. No. 2. August 1971. If you are interested in a copy of this booklet let me know. The price is $2.00 each.

Carolyn Hales marries Larry Gienger. On December 30th, 1972 Carolyn Hales became the bride of Larry Gienger. Caro1yn Luana Hales is the oldest daughter of Forrest John and Marian Luana King Hales of Coquille. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon in Elementary Education and is presently employed in a law firm. Larry is a law enforcement officer with the Eugene City Police Department. His family are from Tillamook, Oregon where he was raised on a dairy ranch. Congratulations from all of the Hales’es.

David Clay Hales birth. I take pleasure in announcing the birth of our sixth son. David Clay Hales was born on March 26, 1973 at John Muir Memorial Hospital in Walnut Creek, Calfornia. "Clay" weighed in at 8 pounds 12 ounces. He has a touch of sandy red hair. His mother Judy is doing well. His father Kenneth Glyn still wonders what kind of special magic it takes to produce a girl, but is pleased with the new addition.

Annabelle Hales Honored. Annabelle Hales was honored as "Woman of the Year" at Beaver, Utah on 2 April 1973. Esta Cox, "Woman of the Year" for 1972 had the honor of pinning an orchid corsage on her – songs Annabelle loved were sung such as "Love Makes The World Go Round," and "Just A Little Street Where Old Friends Meet." Arlo Messinger, a close relative, whose mother was raised in the Hales home, told of the love and understanding of the sisters, Ruby McMullin, Elsie and Annabelle. He also told of the many times both families have enjoyed fun trips and other get-togethers. Chase Murdock told what a good business woman Annabella was. She went into business for herself in 1945 in a building she rented from the Murdocks. He read a tribute he had written when she retired from that business. Helen Christiansen presented the "Woman of the Yar" plaque to Annabelle. To the strains of "Blue Moon" and "Memories" the event was a fitting climax to the many years of service Annabelle has given to the public.

Diane Hales and Pam Bristol win Doubles Championship. Diane Hales, the wife of Dr. R. Stanton Hales, teamed with Pam Bristol and captured the women’s doubles championship in the 20th United States Amateur Badminton Open tournament at Central Connecticut State College in New Britain.

Bristol and Hales upset international contenders Eva Twedberg, of Ystad, Sweden (who won the singles title) and Bridget Cooper, of Lancashire, England, 12-15, 15-12 and 18-13.

Diane is the daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh Stanton Hales of Pasadena, California.

Diane was not only National Intercollegiate Singles Badminton Champion in 1970, but also U. S. National Closed Singles Champion in 1971.

RESEARCH IN ENGLAND

By copy of this newsletter to Mr. Stokes, Record Agent of Cobham, Kent, I advise him that the five books, Kentish Sources – Roads and Bridges; Kent and the Civil War; Aspects of Agriculture and Industry; The Poor; and Some Kentish Houses; arrived safely. I would also like to publicly thank him for all of his efforts and excellent work in our behalf. May we continue to make progress in this great work.

From our English Researcher, Mr. Raymond E. Stokes, comes the following: "I was interested in the paragraph in the newsletter concerning Leonard Hales and the addresses on the repair slips. Someone has no doubt furnished the information by now, but in case not I am enclosing a note of the location of the places mentioned. They are all in a small compass and L. Hales should be able to trace his family in the Parish registers.

Unfortunately there are not copies for any of these parishes at the library of the Society of Genealogists." The letter then lists the following information:

THRAPSTON – Market Town and Parish on river Nen, Northamptonshire, 8 1/4 miles SW of Oundle and 21 miles NE of Northampton.

CATWORTH – Parish and village West Huntingdonshire. 4 miles N of Kimbolton Population 384.

HALES MANUSCRIPT PAGES

Starting with this issue of the Hales Newsletter, Vol. 4. No. 1., pages were published that were submitted for our Hales book. Over the next few years many Hales Manuscript pages were gathered. These pages have not been included in this version of the reprinted Old Series Hales Newsletters. They have since been published as "The Hales Chronicles" now in the second edition (2001).

The second edition of The Hales Chronicles contains 31,189 Hales individuals. It spans three volumes containing 1,696 pages not counting the fore pages – a total of 1,720 pages overall. Since the Hales Manuscript Pages are expanded, corrected, and better organized in The Hales Chronicles, it does not make sense to reproduce them here.

Copies of The Hales Chronicles are placed in The Family History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington DC; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; The Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England; and The Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The Hales Chronicles are also available for anyone having access to the internet. This availability to review the content and to search for ancestors is provided as a service to anyone by our society. To view these files search for:

www.hales.org

The Hales Chronicles are planned to be updated at five year intervals with the Third Edition planned for the year 2005.

Please look at The Hales Chronicles and verify the information that pertains to you and your branch of the Hales family. If you have corrections or additions please send them by mail to the author:
