This is the on-line version. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.
The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.
The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).
If you would like a printed version, reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.
I do not claim to be a scholar,
No, I'm simply just a common man
Striving to earn an honest living,
And I'm doing the very best I can.
Although our path is rough and rugged
And from that path we oft times stray,
Yet we look for a brighter future,
Yes, for a brighter happier day.
But perchance our lives are blighted,
Yet we work with strife and pride.
Although we may not gain the victory
Until we reach the other side.
In the depths of meditation
On that river life so wide,
We are drifting, onward drifting,
To that shore, the other side.
While on this voyage we have to battle
With the ways of strife and pride,
Yet over wafted, farther onward,
To that shore, the other side.
Then when our voyage is at an end
And we meet our loved on that shore
We’ll shout HOSANNAH to our maker
And sing his praises ever more.

Hales Coat of Arms description. Alfred D. Hales, M.P., House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada sent me an interesting article which appeared in the Kent Life Magazine of March, 1973, from which I quote the fol1owing:
The family's coat of arms ... may be thought to reflect a raining down or "hail" of arrows. Anyone who saw the film "Henry V" and the scenes of the firing of arrows from long bows during the French wars would appreciate what an appropriate cant or illustrated pun on the name this simple coat is."
The article goes on to give some history on the Hales name, most of which is well known in many other sources so I will not try to include them here.
