This is the on-line version. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.
The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.
The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).
If you would like a printed version, reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.
This issue completes our fourth year of The Hales Genealogical Society and the publication of our newsletter. Please check your address label to see if your subscription has expired. There will be no formal notice of your subscription’s expiration.
The cost of the Hales Newsletter is $5.00 per year. This money is used to pay for our researcher in England, printing materials for the Newsletter, Postage fees, and other genealogical oriented expenses. No funds are used for salaries or other remunerations connected with our family organization.

To the Hales Family
Through the media of
The Hales Newsletter.
Dear members of the Hales Family –
I would like to take this opportunity to express for the Charles Henry Hales (Utah Pioneer – 1852) family appreciation for the wonderful services rendered by Kenneth Glyn Hales and his associates in Walnut Creek, California, in gathering, preparing, publishing and mailing the Hales Newsletter. I am sure few of us appreciate the sweat, blood and tears and sums of money that go into this project four times a year.
This Newsletter is invaluable to hundreds of Hales family members who are interested in their far-flung kin who have made important contributions to their society, who are accomplishing worthwhile projects, succeeding in business, politics, education, scientific research, productive farming and many other activities. The Genealogical information each newsletter furnishes becomes the fulfillment of a genealogists dream and many of us are in that category. I have all numbers conveniently bound for ready and frequent reference.
I trust that every member who carry the Hales name or wear some of the Hales blood will get enthusiastically behind this Newsletter with his paid-for subscription, with your family record sheet for inclusion in the forthcoming Hales book and with interesting current news items and historic incidents of family importance.
Let us not let this wonderful family project lag or fail because of our apathy or lack of support.
Sincerely,
/s/ Wayne B. Hales

From Doris Elma Hales Grant of 222 3rd Street, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada T1A 5M3 comes the following interesting article.
My great grandfather and also his father came from the county of Cavan in Irelane (Eire) from the parish of Killashandra. I have learned that Killashandra is a very small parish in a very flat country surrounded by lakes.
The name Killashandra means "Church of the Old Rath." The word is an Anglicized form of the Irish (Gaelic). The word "rath" means pre-historic fort – built of clay and some stones. Before the use of artillery it would have been a stronghold. When Christianity came to this country about 432 A.D. these places were used as sites for churches, so the name Killashandra arose.
The above was sent to me by the Reverend John J. Wilson, the head of the Methodist Church in the County of Cavan.
In 1922 there was an uprising and Ireland separated into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (Eire). During this uprising a great many records were burned in a fire. However, some of the records of the County of Cavan and Killashandra are still intact.
Miss Scott married Mr. Baker and their daughter Jane, married in 1791 or 1792 James Hales (born August 4, 1764) a farmer in the county of Cavan, Ireland.
The "Ribbon Men" during the rebellion were seizing all firearms and killing all the Protestant men. Grandma heard them surrounding the house and roused grandpa, who, it being a stormy night, thought he was safe. He jumped for the window and landed in the empty cradle, which whirled around and around. He mad another attempt and went through the window, taking the sash with him. He lay all night in the wet oats which undermined his health. He died in 1828 from an abscess.
The "Ribbon Men" (Catholics) were so angry at his escape, the leader struck grandma a severe blow on the side, breaking her ribs and causing other injuries from which she never fully recovered. She died about 1835 or 1836.
Their eldest son, Thomas, was born April 20, 1793. He took a severe cold while hunting which turned to pneumonia and he died at 19 years of age.
William, born March 2nd 1795 married Jane Waldon in 1817 or 1818 and came to Canada in 1818. The oldest daughter was born at sea on the way to Canada. William brought his brother with him. They settled in Hastings County on what is now Belleville, Ontario. William Hales was a shoemaker by trade.
James, born March 10th 1797, came to Canada in 1820 bringing his father, mother, two sisters and brother Charles. He took up land, 100 acres in the township of Burgess, County of Leeds. He married Anna Leggett of South Crosby. They had ten children – four died in infancy. The others: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Eliza, William James and Emma Evangeline survived him.
James was in active work as an ordained New Connection Methodist Minister for 25 years at $225 a year. He bore the Master’s message until the day of his death. Ill health caused him to super-anuate. He still preached two or three times each Sunday as well as during the week. He died April 29th, 1858.
Richard, born March 11th, 1800 came to Canada with his brother William in 1818. He went up to the township of Seymour with a party of surveyors and took up 200 acres of land. He married Eliza Graham and lived at Hales Corners, now Fofar, until his death in 1877.
Elizabeth, born March 10th, 1802, married Arthur Clendenning. He came to Canada the same time as William Hales. He lived near Belleville, Ontario for a short time. He took up land in Lanark County and lived there a year. He then came to North Crosky where he took up land. They afterwards moved to Carrick, County of Bruce. After his death Elizabeth and her daughter Belle (Mrs. Brown) went to British Columbia where she died in May 1891.
Mary, born March 9th,1804, married John Leggett of South Crosby. He was born in Wexford, Ireland. To secure farms for their boys they moved to the township of Brant, County of Bruce. He died March 1st, 1865. Mary died in 1891.
Charles, was born March 22nd, 1806. He was apprenticed as a clerk to learn the mercantile business to Mr. McCloud of Kingston. He became a successful merchant and married Charlotte Chuttle – an English lady. She and two children died of scarlet fever. His daughters: Jane Angela and Mary died of cholera. His troubles were increased by the sudden death of his only son, Joseph Henry, whom he survived a short time.
John, born June 25th, 1808, died 1817 in Ireland.
From a clipping dated September 27, 1953.
APSLEY (ENS) --A very impressive service was held in Trinity United Church on Sunday evening when the Rev. E. W. Row, assistant minister of George Street United Church, Peterborough, dedicated a beautiful oak communion table in memory of three brothers and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Hales, Mr. and Mrs. Wi11iam Hales and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hales, who came to this district about the year 1867 and were among the founders of the Methodist Church here. The table was a gift from the grandchildren of these three men.
Benjamin Hales was a local preacher in the early days here, often wa1king seven miles from his home to conduct services in the White Church, north of Apsley and walking home after the service.
Three generations of his family have served as organists in Apsley Methodist Church and later United Church. These are Mrs. A. W. Pattison, (nee Julia Hales – deceased), Mrs. Wellington Lean, (nee Bertha Hales) and Mrs. (Rev.) R. G. Hazlewood (nee Helen Lean) of Mount Forest.
The table was presented to the minister and session by Jack Hales of Peterborough on behalf of the grandchildren and was unveiled by Everett Hales of Peterborough and Bobbie Hales of Apsley.
William Hales conducted a service in his own home when no other building was available and his daughter, Mrs. Alex Brown (deceased) was an ardent Sunday School worker. One of his descendants is now Mrs. (Rev.) Robert Kitchen of Fort Erie.
Charles Hales was an ardent supporter of Eden United Church at Mt. Julian. He was a carpenter and helped in the erection of several churches in this district. His daughter, Mrs. Harrison Bronson, is a member of Eden United Church and was treasurer of that church as long as health permitted.
Music for the service was supplied by Trinity United Church choir with Mrs. Lean, oldest grandchild of the oldest brother, at the organ.
Those from Peterborough present were Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Prest; Mr. and Mrs. R. Tucker; Mr. and Mrs. E. Watson; Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Lean; Mr. and Mrs. J. Hales; Mr. and Mrs. E. Hales; Mrs. O. Brown; Misses Wilma Watson, Elma Tucker, Bonnie Hales and M. V. H. Hales and Mrs. Harrison Bronson of Mt. Julian.
