This is the on-line version. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.
The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.
The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).
If you would like a printed version, reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.
The Hales Genealogical Society has moved. Due to a promotion within the company I work for, it is necessary to relocate once again. We will be moving into our new home in Longmont, Colorado on October 14, 1974. Until that time things will be a little unsettled so please be patient if I am slow to respond to your mail.
By way of explanation, I have been in Colorado since last November filling a temporary position which now has become permanent. If the last year has seemed to be a little disorganized that is the reason.
The secretary of the Hales Genealogical Society is Kenneth Glyn Hales, 2405 Collyer Street, Longmont, Colorado 80501. Please use this address for all correspondence.
This section of our Hales Newsletter contains the "happenings" that I am made aware of between issues. Contributions of articles for this section are requested and welcomed. If you see an item of information concerning someone named Hales, please send me a copy so that it can be included in our Newsletter.

Canada Hales Reunion. Another Hales Reunion was celebrated at Rondeau Park, Ontario, Canada on June 30, 1974 reports Milton Hales of Chatham. This line was originally gathered together in another generation in 1936 at Belle Isle, Detroit, Michigan, and has been spasmodically revived through the years to 1974. This year 42 relatives and friends assembled on a Sunday that started with rain, thunder and lightning. Lunch was at 1:30 p.m., games, races, and contests drew attention during some sunny moments of the afternoon. Reminiscing and whose grandmother was related to who filled in at other times. A passing of the hat collected enough and more to cover the costs of prizes and treats. Supper at 5, well wishes to those leaving and promises to see each other next year, same place, and then back home.
Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Lamar Hales Anniversary. An open house in celebration of the Fortieth Anniversary of their marriage was held on Saturday the fourteenth of September in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Lamar Hales. The event was given by their children as a token of their esteem.

Alice Hargan Hales. Mrs. Alice Hales, 81, a resident of Carpinteria Valley since 1910, died Thursday, January 24th, 1974, in a Santa Barbara hospital after several years of ill health.
Mrs. Hales was born in Santa Barbara on December 22, 1692, the daughter of Theodore Hargan, who had come to Santa Barbara from Iowa, and Sarah Lynch Hargan, who was born in County Sligo, Ireland.
Her mother, Sarah Lynch, also came from Ireland, as a very small child, to live with relatives in Cambridge, Massachusett; and in 1837 when she was 15 years old she came by train to Santa Barbara to live with her older sister, Mary, (Mrs. Hermann Rather). Mrs. Hales father, Theodore Hargan died as a young man in a county train accident. Later her mother married George Henry Gould, who had come to this area from England. The family acquired property in 1911 at Scenic Point in Toro Canyon and made their home there for many years.
On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1914, Alice married Orrin Emery Hales, a Carpinteria Valley rancher. They lived a full country life here, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1964, honored by friends and relatives at a large reception. Mr. Hales passed away last October.
Mrs. Hales was deeply interested in her family and friends. She spent many hours in developing her beautiful flower garden. She was also was active in community affairs, being a member of the Carpinteria Woman's club, the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society, and the P.T.A. She and others organized the Carpinteria Valley Garden Club, of which she was president for several years. During this time she was responsible for the planting of several of the large trees now growing on the front lawns of the Carpinteria Junior High School, as well as some of the planting at the Carpinteria Woman's club. Her interest in education was a primary inspiration for her children.
Mrs. Hales leaves a daughter, Mrs. George Edward (Sadie Grace) Johnson, of Carpinteria; a son, Nat Edward Hales, Sr., of Menlo Park, California; four grandchildren: Mrs. Eva Jo Rode, Menlo Park; Miss Melissa Whittemore, West Los Angeles; Nat E. Hales, Jr., of San Jose; and Mark Harvey Johnson of Carpinteria; as well as five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a half-sister, Mrs. William J. Jansen, of Carpinteria. Her half-brother George Henry Gould, Jr. of Morro Bay passed away in 1972.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. John Imbach, Jr., at the Santa Barbara Chapel of Welch-Ryce Associates at 2 p.m. on Monday. Burial followed at the Hales family plot in the Carpinteria Cemetery.
