This is the on-line version. The original was scanned and the text corrected for spellings, something that was very difficult in the original mimeograph process. There is also some minor editing. The Hales Manuscript pages being developed during the publication of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletter have been deleted because the content is now found in The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition with the third edition planned for 2005.
The Hales Chronicles can be found on the Hales web-page at www.hales.org and at The Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City, Utah; The Library of Congress at Washington, D.C.; The Library of The Society of Genealogists at London, England; and the Centre for Kentish Studies at Maidstone, Kent, England.
The Hales Newsletter is provided to the above cited repositories and the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Allen County Public Library indexes our publication and provides articles through their Periodical Source Index (PERSI).
If you would like a printed version, reprints of the Old Series of The Hales Newsletters are available at a cost of $3.00 each.
This Newsletter completes five full years of assembling data on the Hales family. I have sent a copy of this Newsletter to everyone on my address list with the hope each Hales family who has not sent me a copy of their family information will have a chance to do so. If I you send me a copy of your family information, I will include it in our Hales manuscript. If you do not send me your information, your family will be left out of our Hales book. This is the last call for Hales family information.
What am I trying to do? I am trying to publish a book containing all of the Hales families in the United States and Canada. Also in this book will be the families of the ancestors of all Hales families as far as I am able to reconstruct them. Too often records die with a generation. I propose that we as a family leave a good record for our posterity.
Would you please spend a few minutes and fill out the tear off sheet attached to this Newsletter and mail it back to me. All that will take is a little bit of your time and a 10ct stamp. It will he1p me to correct addresses in our Hales Directory and add your family to our Hales Book manuscript.
If you would like to continue getting Hales Newsletters during the coming year the cost is $5.00 per year. This money is used to help pay for our researcher in England. It also pays for the materials and postage for the Newsletter. No money is used by me for a salary. My involvement in the Hales Genealogical Society is voluntary and all of my time is donated as a service to the Hales family. All of the money received is used for furthering the work of building our Hales family record.
The equipment I use to prepare the Newsletter has been purchased with my own funds and remains my property. However, no charges for use of this equipment is made to the Hales Genealogical Society.
Thanks to all of you who have so generously contributed to our society with your information and your funds.
This section of our Hales Newsletter contains the "happenings" that I am made aware of between issues. Contributions of articles for this section are requested and welcomed. If you see an item of information concerning someone named Hales, please send me a copy so that it can be included in our Newsletter.
Jennifer Lea Hales marries Thomas Scott Williams. Now making their temporary residence in Idaho Falls, Idaho are the new Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Scott Williams. Both are employed locally and future plans include the bridegroom resuming his education at Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Price Hales of 365 Holbrook Drive, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83401. Her husband is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd T. Williams of 930 Woodruff Ave., Idaho Falls, Idaho, 83401.
The couple exchanged wedding vows on May 9, 1975 during ceremonies in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Officiating at the temple ceremony was President John L. Porter.
Nuptial festivities honoring the newlyweds included a reception following the wedding at the Idaho Falls Reception Center. The bride was further feted at a pre-nuptial party hosted by Mrs. Walter Jaussi, Jane Jaussi and Pam Virgin.
The bridal gown was designed and created by the bride and her sister Patty Hales Mecham.
Serving as bridal attendants were Patty Mecham, sister of the bride; Terry Morley of Burley, Idaho; Lezlie Williams, sister of the bridegroom; and Jane Jaussi of Idaho Falls. The flower girl was Stephanie Mecham, niece of the bride.
Standing with his brother as best man was Randy Williams of Provo, Utah and additionally serving as best man was Harvey Forsgren of Salt Lake City, Utah. Ushering were Jeff Hales of Pocatello, Idaho; and John Hales and Melvin Mecham, both of Idaho Falls.
The newlyweds honeymooned in Sun Valley.
Idaho Falls Art Guild Features Goldie Hales. The art work of Goldie Hales was featured on September 19th at the Eagle Rock Art Gallery on West Elva in Idaho Falls. Along with her exhibit was also a display of a unique exhibit of brass rubbings created by her son, Jeff, during a stay in London, England. Mrs. Hales repeated the exhibit by popular demand; the original display was in March of !974.
Mrs. Hales states, "Of all the monuments to be seen in cathedrals and churches of South-East England, the least recognized are the medieval engraved monumental brasses. They are generally found in inaccessible places, under pews and mats, behind the chapel organ, and in one instance on a steeple roof. There has been an increased interest in brasses, partly due to press references and interior decorators use them as excellent wall hangings.
All classes of society are commemorated in the brasses; bishops, knights, ladies, city burghers, monks, and servants. Brasses could be made in almost any size ranging from a half-effigy, to life-size figures accompanied by canopy, this made them within the financial reach of a .large cross-section of the community."
Mrs. Hales further related, "A vast majority of brasses are commemorated to persons absolutely unknown to history. Besides giving us a pictorial history of the development of armour, civilian fashions and ecclesiastical vestments from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries, memorial brasses form a valuable commentary on the day-to-day life in medieval England."
The brasses shown were from areas of Canterbury, Kent County and the Isle of Sheppey.
Mrs. Hales, a native of the Idaho Falls area, has been a member of the Idaho Falls Art Guild for 15 years, and has served twice as president of the organization. She has also served as secretary, treasurer, and has been a gallery director for eight years.
Mrs. Hales and her husband, Max, live at 365 Holbrook and are the parents of four children. They have three grandchildren.
The Hales Manuscript. Manuscript pages of Hales Families have been removed from these Old Series Newsletters – these pages can be found in their published form: The Hales Chronicles, now in its second edition. The cover page of the Hales Newsletters describe where copies of The Hales Chronicles can be found.
If your family is not in The Hales Chronicles, the third edition is planned for the year 2005. You can submit your information and it will be included then.
It is interesting to note that many of your ancestors are often in the manuscript. As an example of that, I visited one Hales family in Denver while on a temporary assignment. They were able to tell me the names of their Hales grandparents in Minneapolis. Using the manuscript pages I was able to identify for them three more generations back in the United States and Canada and two more generations into England. I feel confident that if we all pitch in and send in our family's information and perhaps that of our parents family we can build a good genealogy of our ancestors.
Congratulations to Terry Hales – age 9 – of Longmont, Colorado for his very nice drawing in the FRIEND magazine for November, 1975.
